Backgammon Rules

The primary goal of backgammon is to move all your checkers into your home board and then bear them off before your opponent does the same. The first player to bear off all their checkers wins the game.

Starting the Game

Setting Up the Board: Each player starts with 15 checkers arranged as follows:
- Two checkers on each player’s 24-point.
- Five checkers on each player’s 13-point.
- Three checkers on each player’s 8-point.
- Five checkers on each player’s 6-point.
Rolling the Dice: Both players roll one die to determine who goes first. The player with the higher number starts and uses both dice to make their first move. If both players roll the same number, they roll again until one player rolls a higher number.

Movement of Checkers

Rolling the Dice: On each turn, a player rolls two dice. The numbers rolled represent two separate moves. For example, if you roll a 3 and a 5, you can move one checker three points forward and another checker five points forward, or move one checker a total of eight points (three plus five).
Legal Moves: A checker can be moved to any point that is not blocked by two or more opposing checkers. A point with a single opposing checker is called a blot. If you land on a blot, you capture the opponent’s checker and it is placed on the bar.
Re-entering Checkers: Checkers on the bar must re-enter the game by moving to an open point in the opponent’s home board corresponding to the number rolled on the dice.

Bearing Off

Entering the Home Board: Once all your checkers are in your home board, you can start bearing them off. To bear off a checker, you must roll a number that corresponds to the point on which the checker resides.
Winning the Game: The first player to bear off all their checkers wins the game.

Doubling Cube

Doubling: At any point during the game, a player may propose doubling the stakes. The opponent can accept the double, or concede the game.
Redoubling: If a double is accepted, the opponent now controls the doubling cube and may propose the next double.

Gammon and Backgammon

Gammon: If a player bears off all their checkers before the opponent bears off any, it is called a gammon, and the game is worth double the stakes.
Backgammon: If a player bears off all their checkers before the opponent bears off any and the opponent still has checkers in the player’s home board or on the bar, it is called a backgammon, and the game is worth triple the stakes.
